"Trajinera" comes from the Spanish verb "Trajinar", which means carrying goods from one place to another. Originally, trajinera boats were meant for these purposes. Porfirio Diaz – former Mexican president, used the trajinera boats to tour his guests around Xochimilco, and later it turned out to be one of the prime pastimes for Mexicans. 

Most trajineras can accommodate as many as twenty people on wooden bench tables. But you can even choose the bigger ones known as lanchas colectivas that fits over sixty people. Although you can enjoy a trajinera ride along the Xochimilco Canals any time, the right time to enjoy the ride is on Sundays. It's the best way to experience the trajinera boat ride as a local. 

Important Things –

  • It can be a bit crowded, especially if you visit on the weekends. If you want a more tranquil experience, visit there early in the morning on a weekday. 
  • It's suggested to book the trajinera boat ride for at least two hours. This way, you will venture away further and explore more sightings. 
  • It's better to bring a large and lively group for maximum enjoyment and fun. 
  • It remains busy during the Semana Santa, Holy Week. It's the busiest week of the year.
